 Guardian ad Litem (GAL): A GAL is  someone who may be appointed by the court to represent the best interests of an  individual for a specific purpose for a specific period of time. The legislature recognizes that people  with incapacities have unique abilities and needs, and that some people with  incapacities cannot exercise their rights or provide for their basic needs  without the help of a guardian.
