Gunesakaran Kumar

Mr Kumar is a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery at Liverpool University Hospitals Foundation Trust, working at Aintree Hospital and Broadgreen Hospital. He specialises in primary and revision total hip replacements, primary knee replacements, knee arthroscopy, where he specialises in knee replacements, revision knee replacements, partial knee replacements, hip replacements and knee arthroscopy. He also co-founded the Liverpool Metastatic Bone Disease Service (LiMBS) that specialises in surgical management of patients with metastatic bone disease of long bones – endoprosthetic replacements, complex joint reconstructions and bone stabilisation procedures.

Mr Kumar is from India, gained primary medical qualification of MBBS from Madras Medical College. He underwent post-graduate training in Trauma and Orthopaedics at Kilpauk Medical College, Madras. After a couple of years of practice in Madras, India, he came over to UK to pursue further training. He completed higher surgical training as a Specialist Registrar in London Deanery and Mersey Deanery and gained FRCS (Tr & Orth). Following this he got into Specialist Register for Trauma and Orthopaedics. As part of his trauma interest, via AO Trauma he had training in Pelvic and Acetabular surgery in Harborview Medical Center, Seattle under the care of Prof Rout. On returning from this training, he took up the post of Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon dealing with complex trauma including pelvic and acetabular fracture surgery, hip and knee arthroplasty.

Due to updated NHS guidance regarding metastatic bone disease, he worked towards developing a dedicates service that dealt with metastatic bone disease. As this took lot of clinical time, he gave up pelvic and acetabular fracture work. Metastatic bone disease service has developed over time and is one of the unique services in the UK.

Over time he has undertaken management roles including the monthly trauma outcomes, lower limb lead and currently is the lead for elective orthopaedics.

As part of medical teaching, he supervises medical students from University of Liverpool and specialist trainees from Northwest Deanery, teach in local and national FRCS courses, principles of fracture management run by AO Trauma.

He has undertaken various projects that have been presented nationally and internationally and published in peer reviewed journals.

Mr Kumar spends his leisure time playing cricket and badminton.
